Street Food Berlin, Markthalle IX
Street Food Thursday at Markthalle IX in Kreuzberg is probably the birth place of Berlin street food. When it started in summer 2013 it was a real insider tip. Now the masses are here, but the food is still delicious, hand made and full of love. When it comes to street food the creative potential of the city is long not exhausted. With its weekly event the historical Markthalle serves as residency to long-established marketers like Big Stuff Barbeque or Heißer Hobel. It also serves as platform for the vast amount of newbies, who keep the mix of food fresh and interesting. It is likely to get „todesvoll“ (deathly crowded), so it’s best to arrive early, treasure up food and drinks, then eat and watch the growing crowd.
We seriously recommend a pie from Hello Good Pie, Käsespätzle from already mentioned Heißer Hobel, a pulled pork sandwich from Big Stuff, ceviche from Glut & Späne, Fräulein Kimchi’s Kimchi, all washed down with craft beer from Heidenpeters, followed by the best apple crumble in town prepared by Apfel on Tour. But any other choice will also be good.
Nearly commercially dead since the late 1970s, the 120-year old Markthalle IX, was taken over by three private investors in October 2011. They revived the concept of a variety of specialized local vendors. Besides Thursdays, Markthalle IX is open Fridays and Saturdays for its weekly market, offering fresh fruit and vegetable, flowers, cheese, bread, delicatessen and much more. On 2nd October 2014 Markthalle IX hosts Berlin’s first Street Food Festival with 70 vendors selling their creations in and around markthalle.
